So We Just Don’t Like Winning OT Games? – Grizzlies vs Trail Blazers Recap

Monday night the Grizzlies suffered their second defeat in a row to a visiting team in overtime.  The Portland Trail Blazers walked away from FedExForum with a 112-106 victory over our Memphis Grizzlies.  The Blazers have won 1 of 3 OT games while the Grizzlies are now winners of 2 out of 5 OT games.

Notes:

*Pregame there was a slight issue with the lights in the arena…they were out before the anthem, then left on during the player intros. Weird…

*Tony Allen was feeling himself in the first quarter. He ended the game with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 steal.  Seven of TA’s 8 points were in the 1st, with his lone 8th point a free throw split in the late 4th with 7.6 seconds left in regulation.  Memphis had a 102-100 lead after this, but CJ McCollum got a tip to tie the game and send it to overtime.  Allen attempted a breakaway layup with about 10 seconds left in OT with the Grizz behind 108-106, but he missed and the Grizz didn’t score again.  You could tell Allen was hurt by the way the game ended and his performance, saying in postgame “That’s one I’d like to have back. I want to take this one on the chin personally. If I make that layup, we get a chance to hold our hats on the defense. You make that play; we settle with our defense and maybe go into overtime. I look back at those free throws. If I hit both of those free throws, maybe we win the game.”

*Marc Gasol – Gasol looked to be on his way to a good night, frustrating Portland’s Myers Leonard into a foul and then getting into slight almost-but-not-really-altercation with him.

I’ve never seen Marc Gasol bow up like that, but I honestly kinda liked the passion…

Gasol had 11 points (4-6), went 3-3 from the charity stripe, had 3 rebounds, and also dished 3 assists in his 10:59 of action before going out with a foot injury late in the 1st quarter.

Of course, we find out later that Gasol has a fracture in his right foot.

Oh how we’ll miss you while you’re out Big Spain…

*Zach Randolph ended the night with 26 points (12-19), 2-2 from the charity stripe, 9 boards, and 4 assists in a little over 40 minutes of play.  In the first half, Randolph abused former Grizz Ed Davis.  In OT, Randolph was only able to score 6 points.

*Mike Conley had a good game, finishing with 27 points (10-17, 2-3 from beyond the arc, 5-6 from the charity stripe), 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal.  Conley was fouled with 2:35 left in the 3rd quarter on a 3 point shot by Damian Lillard with the teams tied at 92. Conley made 2 of the 3 freebies. Conley was only able to score 2 points in overtime.

*Mario Chalmers had 12 points (5-12, 1-2 from 3), 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal.

*Jeff Green had 12 points on 5-14 shooting, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 blocks.  He hit a nice 15 foot shot at the end of the 1st quarter, but also had a mishap when he tipped in a missed tap by CJ McCollum at the end of regulation, giving Portland the 2 points they needed to send the game to overtime.

*Portland had 5 score in double figures (CJ McCollum had 21, Damian Lillard had a game high 33, Gerald Henderson with 16, Allen Crabbe with 13, and Moe Harkless with 11).

*Free throw woes – Grizzlies went 14-20 from the line while the Blazers went 13-19.  If those free throws were made….

*The Grizz shot 50% from the field (43-86) while the Trail Blazers shot right under that at 49.4% (44-89).

*The Grizz barely won the battle of the boards with 39 to Portland’s 37.

*Memphis was better from beyond the arc, shooting 36.8% (7-19) while Portland was able to hit 34.5% (10-29).

*Points in the Paint: Portland outdid the Grizz in the paint 52-46.

*2nd Chance Points: Grizz 6 (2-8) – Portland 4 (2-9).

*Fast Break: Grizzlies 6 (2-5) to Trail Blazers 12 (6-9).
