Back to .500: Grizz vs Spurs Recap

Share the joy

Saturday night the Grizzlies took on the San Antonio Spurs in AT&T Center.  The Grizz came into the game at 7-6 while the Spurs came in at 9-3.  After suffering a 104-90 defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night, we knew Coach Pop would have the Spurs ready for battle.  The Grizzlies were without Zach Randolph (sore knee), Brandan Wright (sore knee), Jordan Adams (knee) and Jarell Martin (foot).  The Spurs were without LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle).

Game Notes:

* JaMychal Green started in place of Randolph while David West started for the Spurs.  JaMychal Green finished with 8 points on 3-6 shooting, 5 rebounds, and 1 steal but was limited by 5 fouls.

* Tony Allen opened up the game with a 20-foot jumper off a Marc Gasol assist.  After that, the Grizz never led again.

*Mike Conley was the only Grizz starter in double figures, finishing with 16 points on 5-12 shooting with 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

*The other Grizz starters (Marc Gasol, Tony Allen, Jeff Green, JaMychal Green) combined for 28 points, 22 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 steals.

*The Grizzlies bench had 38 points on the night.

*Matt Barnes finished with 10 points on 5-8 shooting.

*Courtney Lee notched 15 points on 5-10 shooting and was aggressive during the game.

*Vince Carter played for the second straight game in the first quarter (after not playing since the first game of the regular season).  He had 7 points, including a nice +1 sequence in the first quarter.

*Marc Gasol looked aggressive and angry down the stretch, which isn’t at all a bad thing.  If the Grizz are going to go anywhere, Gasol must be engaged and aggressive in every single game.

*Mario Chalmers came back down to earth a bit with 6 points on 2-10 shooting, went 0-2 from beyond the arc, had 4 assists, and racked up 4 personal fouls.  Rio won’t get the calls he got before against teams like the Spurs.

*Jeff Green left the court in the early minutes of the 3rd quarter after bumping heads with Tony Allen when both were attempting to grab a steal.  He went back to the locker room but came back shortly.  Green finished with 6 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal, and 2 personal fouls.

*Grizz were 1-9 from beyond the arc while the Spurs went 7-21.

*Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Kawhi Leonard combined for 51 points.

As I said last night, Spurs delight in ruining everyone’s fun. This is not new. Tip your hat & move on.  Dallas is up next. Be there.
