Grizzlies 104, Spurs 110

Grizzlies Head Coach David Joerger:

On tonight’s game…

“It was a good game. Battled our tails off. I thought we had a chance to win. The biggest play of the game was when Lance [Stephenson] got tackled and they go down and hit a three. It was very, very frustrating. So you know right there, came out in second half played with a lot more defensive energy, the second half. They hit four threes in a row I think there at one point or three threes in a row, and that was it.”

On trying to contain LaMarcus Aldridge…

“Well at times, we have to help stop the basketball. He’s a pretty good player. If the big had to help stop the basketball, he was getting stuff of the glass too and then kickouts and high-lows. We struggled to contain the ball in the first half. He got stuff around the rim and then he certainly felt good about it.”

Grizzlies Guard Lance Stephenson:
On the fourth quarter sequence when he fell…

“That probably cost us the game, but I felt like I got fouled. Plus, I was hurt at the same time. I felt my ankle twist a little bit. I should have gotten up and ran back. I think that was one of the reasons why we lost the game.”

On what was said during halftime…
“We weren’t really talking on defense. We were just following them. I felt like once we started talking, we started playing better defense. They just made tough shots. Every possession, they got a clean shot and they ran the clock until they got it. They played great today.”

On the Grizzlies offensive execution…
“The way we run our offense, we just play off our instincts. The Spurs know everybody’s plays and they know how everybody runs their plays, but we just play off our instincts. That’s probably why we got those easy baskets that normal teams don’t get on the Spurs.”

Grizzlies Forward JaMychal Green:
On the loss…
“We started off slow, but in the second half, we picked it up on the defensive end. Tough team to guard, with their system and shooters they have on their team. We got a couple stops, couple deflections in the second half and cut the lead.”

On the Spurs hitting crucial threes…
“The threes hurt us. They’re just a good team that has chemistry. They move the ball well and move without the ball well. They were just tough. There was nothing we could do about it.”

On the Grizzlies third quarter…
“We just knew we had to come out in the second half and play. We had to get stops. In our first half, we were probably like 67 percent from the field. They were knocking down a lot of jumpers and making a lot of shots so we had to come out in the second half and pick it up on the defensive end.”

On the team’s confidence leading into the playoffs…

“When the playoffs come, we’re going to do like we do now, go out and fight all 48-minutes. Just give our best and leave it all on the court.”

Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich:

On the defense getting sloppy in the third quarter…

“We didn’t do a very good job tonight defensively.”

On relying on LaMarcus Aldridge…

“Well we scored enough points, we just didn’t guard.”

On Jonathon Simmons…

“I thought he did a good job. He played soundly, played within himself, did good work. I just think they’re (Memphis) doing a great job with all the injuries and everything. Coach [David] Joerger and his staff have got those guys playing at a high level, and they deserve a lot of credit.”

Spurs Forward LaMarcus Aldridge:

On the game…

“It was a junky game. They didn’t have one of their main guys who changes the whole game out there, playing more inside-out. He touches the ball every time, so I just thought they played their game.”

On why the Grizzlies double-teamed Tim Duncan…

“Because he had a smaller guy on him, that’s what I told him. He’s a Hall of Famer. I’m not. His name just speaks for itself.”

On whether or not the single coverage in the first quarter allowed him to get into a good

rhythm…

“Yeah, I thought having the ball and being able to play one-on-one and having guys find me for easy layups and things like that. That was just good tonight.”

On if Kawhi Leonard’s absence caused him to come out more aggressively…

“It just comes to me. I think the ball just finds its way to me more and I try to put it in the basket basically. Nothing crazy.”

Spurs Guard Manu Ginobili:

On head coach Gregg Popovich’s opinion that the defense in the third quarter was lacking…

“We didn’t play well defensively. We didn’t follow the game plan as expected. I’m not sure if it was effort or just things that happened. They had a good game, but we were always a step too late. It was not a great performance.”

On if this was a game the team could afford this late in the season…

“Yeah, we had a cushion that we can lose a game. It’s not a matter of being able to afford, we just don’t want to make a step backwards. We want to improve in every game, and today we didn’t. So hopefully this road trip helps us be better.”
