Grizz lose to the Jazz 82-73

This was an ugly game. I applaud the fans who stayed until the end of this brutal expedition. The Grizzlies have dropped two in a row at home since the return of Mike Conley from injury. They are now 18-11 for the season and have dropped to sixth in the western conference.

Notes from the game

1) Marc Gasol and Mike Conley combined for 7-of-38 from the field. That’s horrendous for the two. Conley finished with 14 points

2) Troy Daniels ended the game with zero points and only took one shot in the entire game.

3) Zach Randolph recorded his fourth double-double of the season. Zbo finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

4) The Jazz finished with five players in double figures including the Rudy Gobert who recorded his seventh straight double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. (Hayward 22, Diaw 11, Hood 10 and Mack 10).

5) JaMychal Green finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds while recording his fifth double double of the season.

6) James Ennis returned after missing 14 straight games. He finished with five points and four rebounds.

What They Said!!

Coach Fizz

On Mike Conley:

“He’s just got to get minutes. He’s fighting through a lot of pain. He won’t tell you guys that, but he is fighting through a lot of pain. He broke his back and he doesn’t take pain medicine. He is battling for me right now and, at the same time, trying to find his place and his rhythm again. It’s just going to take some time and some games and we will rebuild our connection.”

On the offense:

“Our execution is horrendous right now. We are just not taking pride in executing our offense with purpose. We are not getting to our proper spots and our proper spacing. Some of that is a lack of practice time but some of it is also a lack of concentration. We’ll get back in the gym and we’ll clean that up and get to work.”

On his development as a coach:

“It’s been a constant challenge. But it is nothing that other teams aren’t going through. There have been some other teams out there that is going through it. Utah went through it themselves. But it is a good challenge for me as a young coach. To continue to figure out what pieces on my team work together and which ones don’t. Some of our struggles are on me trying to figure out which combinations work together, what pieces are out, and what pieces are coming back. So I take full responsibility for that and I will continue to work through this team and figure out which combinations work the best. We’ll continue to grow.”

Forward Jarell Martin

On playing with different guys every night:

“We just have to come together as a team. Go out there, play hard and try to come together to get the victory at the end of the day.”

On how he has progressed this season:

“I try to get better and better each game. I’m gaining that confidence the more and more I play. If I’m out there, I’m just trying to maximize my minutes and give 100 percent effort.”

On if the Jazz defense matches up well with the Grizzlies offense:

“It is pretty challenging when you’ve got two teams with length that are real good and competitive on the defensive end. That was challenging for us. We needed to come together as a team, be real patient and execute our offense.”
