Grizzlies vs Knicks recap

Last night your Memphis Grizzlies defeated the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

I realize that this is not exactly a monumental feat, as the Knicks quite frankly are terrible this year, but to the credit of the remaining active players on their roster, they were not going to make it easy on us. The Grizzlies did themselves no favors by playing down to their opponents, which has been an ongoing problem this season.

Winning this game clinched us a playoff spot, gave us our 50th win for the season, and Coach Joerger’s 100th win as head coach. Those are all good things, things that should rightfully be celebrated.

While the Grizzlies started out strong in the first quarter, and ultimately won by a margin of 21 points, it was by no means a sure thing throughout. Once again we saw an early lead cut and eventually depleted by our opponents when at times our defense had frozen up as well as our offense.

When the Grizzlies missed 4 consecutive free throw opportunities early in the 3rd quarter and the Knicks had managed to pull ahead after cutting down an 18 point Memphis lead, it looked like things were about to spiral out of control.

Thankfully our big guys were able to get a rhythm going and dominate play on both ends of the court, and it was the collective efforts of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph that put us back out front and stay there.

Zach would finish the night with a game high 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Marc had 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists.

There were some other notable highlights from the night, although none as bright as a rejuvenated Vince Carter making his mark on 4 of 6 three point shooting. It’s never fun when players are sidelined with injuries, but there is no doubt that recuperation period did Carter a world of good. The return of Vince’s 3 point prowess could not have come at a better time and if it continues will be of tremendous benefit to the Grizzlies down the stretch and into the postseason.

Final score: Grizzlies 103, Knicks 82

The Grizzlies return home to FedEx Forum on Wednesday where they will take on Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
