GRIZZLIES HEAD COACH DAVE JOERGER

Opening statement:

“I was sitting out there thinking about what I was going to say after the game, and it was going to be, ‘Oh it was an ugly game. Whatever.’ But then the ball started going in. At one point, we were 2-13 from three, and then we end up 10-28. I thought the playmaking was fantastic. Marc (Gasol) had a real steady game, Mike Conley was steady in leading us, and then Mario (Chalmers) came in and really did a nice job finding open guys, especially in the second half. Ryan Hollins in the pick-and-roll might not get a lot of credit, but Mario ends up with 10 assists and Jeff Green made a lot of plays to open up guys for shots. That’s what you’re looking for, to get a second unit that gives you a different look. They did a really nice job tonight and I’m very pleased. That’s a team with a lot of injuries, and we got on them early in the second half, and that was a big thing at halftime. I didn’t think we played with a lot of force to start the game, and then we came out in the second half and we did. We got after them with a 7-0 run and we were able to keep that lead of double digits.”

GRIZZLIES CENTER MARC GASOL (15 points, 8 rebounds)

On tonight’s game:

“It was a good win for us against a team that is tough to beat because they play in a way that is very disruptive, especially defensively. They switch a lot of things. They make you move the ball, but we were able to run and make some shots and that takes away a lot of stuff.”

On the Grizzlies scoring over 100 points in seven consecutive games:

“I feel like we’re doing a better job of moving the ball for longer stretches and that always helps. Obviously, when you get in a rhythm offensively you make shots, that also helps. We get more points on the break. Guys are running the break better, scoring, getting to the free throw line, all those good things. Yeah, we’ve got to keep it up.”

On giving up 14 points in the second quarter:

“We gave up less offensive rebounds I thought in the first quarter. When they go to the isos, you try to help a little bit, you lose position normally for the rebound. All their guys, it seemed like, their two-guard was 6’8”, three-guard was 6’11”, so you’re out of position a lot of times. They kept the ball alive in the first quarter. The second quarter was different. We were able to get the rebound and run at them. Once you crash like that, it’s harder to get back and we did a better job of finishing and running at them.”

GRIZZLIES GUARD TONY ALLEN (13 points, 7 rebounds)

On tonight’s game:

“Obviously, we’re very familiar with this team—tough-minded, young, coached by a good coach in Jason Kidd. They got some athletes. Obviously, they were a little banged up and I thought we did a good job of just taking care of business, coming in here and just playing harder, wanting it more and understanding we have something to fight for. Not only that, those guys beat us last year in Milwaukee I believe, so we just want to get back, get in here and play Memphis Grizzly basketball, inside out and play hard for 48 minutes.”

On defending Khris Middleton:

“I just keyed in, listened to my bigs behind me as far as like, Marc (Gasol), Z-Bo (Zach Randolph), Jeff (Green). I pretty much watched film on him before the game and I just keyed in. I know he (Khris Middleton) likes to bump off, and drive and shoot the midrange shot. I was just keeping my antennas up.”

On not having a Grizzly on the all-star roster:

“Obviously, we know that Big Spain got snubbed, we know that. Everybody knows that. If you don’t know that, I’m telling you now. We’ve got bigger goals in mind and we’ll use this rest to fuel the fire and fight for something bigger and better.”

BUCKS

BUCKS HEAD COACH JASON KIDD:

On three-pointers not being a factor until the second half:

“I think the threes but that wasn’t the game. We didn’t get to our pace at all from the start. Being a young team, we have to be able to, on the road, meet their force and we didn’t do that. They played the way Memphis has played forever. Once they got the lead, they started firing off some threes and they started to make a couple. Then the game just out of hand and we were down 20. We looked at some different line-ups going forward. Again, I think our composure, us getting a little frustrated, and a few missed lay-ups, you know that happens in basketball, but I think the biggest thing was we just couldn’t get to our pace, capitalize or get a stop.”

On Grizzlies’ defensive intensity:

“We had some good looks and off some offensive rebounds, we had some good looks but we just couldn’t finish. That happens.”

On Tony Allen:

“I think that is just how he plays. He’s played like that since he’s been in the league. He’s a competitor. He plays both ends. He always has a nose for the ball on both ends. Again, he is getting lay-ups and you even saw him fire off a three. The 50-50 balls we didn’t come up with tonight that put us behind in the ball game.”

On Rashad Vaughn’s attempts at the three-point line:

“Yeah, our bench has to get better and as a team we need to get better. He’s got to shoot the ball, and the more times he does, he will hopefully getting a little more comfortable in that situation and his confidence will grow.”

On the offensive struggles for tonight’s game:

“We started to make some subs and our lead disappeared. Also, we lost control and tempo of the game and they took advantage of that.”

On the Grizzlies’ three-point shooting:

“One, I think the three didn’t hurt us until the game was out of hand. They started firing them off and they made a couple. They made one then we made one at the half and from there they got comfortable getting easy shots. Taking a three is just something when you are wide open, you are just going to let it go because there is no pressure on you. For us, that’s what happened from where I was sitting or standing and we just have to do a better job.”

On Giannis (Antetokounmpo) showing emotion tonight:

“Yeah, I think there is nothing wrong with showing emotion for Giannis or for any of the guys. Giannis cares and he got frustrated. He expressed himself and the referee disagreed.”

BUCKS CENTER MILES PLUMLEE (6 POINTS, 5 REBOUNDS)

On the Grizzlies:

“It’s tough. They have great defense in the paint and that’s where we are really effective too. The game just didn’t go our way.”

On the pace:

“When you take a hit in the mouth, you have to keep coming back. I think we kind of let up and let the pace go and stopped forcing the issue on our end.”

On minutes:

“I felt great, it’s always nice to get some minutes. I try my best to be ready whenever the situation arises. I’m just trying to bring energy and be that spark the team needs some of these nights. It’s tough because you have to have chemistry with the guys. But I try to make myself an easy guy to play with. I try to run hard, set screens, and just try to keep it simple.”

On Memphis’ defense:

“They have great defenders to begin with. But we are a team that attacks the paint and when they really sink in on us, it’s tough. We have to do a better job of making ourselves available when they take that first look in the paint. That’s is what we didn’t do the best job of tonight.”

BUCKS GUARD RASHAD VAUGHN (2 POINTS, 1 STEAL)

On confidence:

“I’m just trying to get more and more confidence and just keep shooting the ball. I’m not going to let missing a shot get me down. I just have to come back tomorrow, ready to shoot more. You’re going to have bad games, but I just have to learn to move on and get ready for the next game.”

On the game:

“A lot of our shots didn’t fall. They played great defense. They are a great team, but we missed a lot of easy shots.”

On Tony Allen:

“He’s a tough defender and just a great player.”

On experience:

“It’s definitely going to help me out each day. It is good for my future to just be out there and to experience all this.”
